Zoom: Issues With Security

With the current situation putting most people in a position to work from home, Zoom has obviously become a connection tool that is used for everything from board meetings to communicating with your child’s school. One huge concern became blatantly apparent once the masses flocked to Zoom to handle day to day business. It is a free service using the basic plan which obviously explains the push for its use. It was touted to have end-to-end encryption which was found out that it didn’t and that it can’t? It was also sharing data with Facebook and collected LinkedIn data. Lack security led to half a million stolen accounts floating around the dark web, recordings vulnerable, and zoom-bombing or unfriendly additions to your zoom call. Put simply as a service it wasn’t prepared to have this level of influx flocking to its service so quickly. This issue left an attorney general in New York with no choice but to write a warning letter and a class action suit started in California. Senators are involved and there has even been digs on how it handles its underage users. Zoom as a company has frozen development on further projects to concentrate on the security issues and all connections to Facebook and LinkedIn have been cut. So, will they truly correct everything to be a better system for all or will things like Facebook and LinkedIn data continue to be a thing because of company ties? Overall I think using zoom through a third party service can increase your security but there is no telling if zoom will fully recover from these issues or not. We will definitely have to see as other conference providers can be rather expensive. What do you think about the future of Zoom or the issues that were had? As always stay aware and stay safe.
